Meet the Principal

Meet Dr. John Montford, Principal and Sunnyside Elementary! Dr. Montford is a graduate of Derby Senior High School and has been in education for 23 years. 

Q: What is your favorite part about your job?

A: My favorite part of the school year is in August when I get to meet new students and their families. 

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: I enjoy spending time with my family at our home.  

Q: Any fun facts about you?

A: I have traveled to 48 states in the U.S., 14 states in Mexico, and 5 Canadian provinces. In 2019, I also co-authored a published research article on school safety titled “It Can Happen Here: Addressing School Safety and Security After a Mass School Shooting in a Small Kansas Town.”

Q: Anything else you’d like to add?

A: The greatest honor of my professional career has been to serve the students, the families, and the community of Sunnyside Elementary.
